Position Overview

The University of Kansas (KU) Political Science Department is seeking an Education Coordinator for the Washington, D.C. Internship Program. For over twenty-five years, the department has maintained a residential internship program in Washington, D.C., running from the first week of January to the last week of April. Typical enrollments range from five to thirty students each year. The program primarily draws from KU, but it is open to any public university student in Kansas. Students are responsible for finding and obtaining their own internships. The department typically coordinates housing for students.

Students in the program typically enroll in at least nine credit hours related to the internship. Three of those credit hours are in the form of the “Washington Seminar.” The seminar is run as a weekly speakers series, running the length of the program from January to April. Invited speakers typically have professional experience in politics or policy in Washington, D.C. Seminars are in-person. Students are expected to complete certain assignments for a letter grade for their seminar assessment.

The late Professor Burdett Loomis founded the program. Professor Patrick Miller now serves as the Washington, D.C. Program Director.

This is a part-time temporary Education Coordinator position. The successful candidate should have relevant work experience in politics or policy in Washington, D.C. The successful candidate will need to host the weekly seminars in-person in Washington, D.C., and be physically accessible to our students in the city when needed. Ties to KU and the Washington, D.C. Internship Program are preferred, but not required.

This is an approximate nine-month appointment with pay-periods spanning the Spring and Fall semesters of each calendar year. The start date is January 3, 2023.

At the University of Kansas, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are an important part of our culture and university strategic plan. Applications from members of underrepresented groups are encouraged, noting the value that differences bring to our organization, students, staff, faculty, and community. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. by the date of the appointment.
