Job Duties
VDOT’s Northern Virginia District is seeking a dynamic transportation professional with a focus on multimodal and bicycle/pedestrian transportation to join the Transportation Planning Section. This role will involve coordination on various projects, plans, studies, and programs – providing technical and planning-level guidance – to improve connectivity, safety, and mobility in a diverse, fast-paced region.
Responsibilities to include but may not be limited to:
VDOT program management: manage NOVA district bicycle/pedestrian efforts, multimodal data collection and monitoring, park & ride lots, and coordination on Transportation Demand Management programs.
Conduct studies and plans: manage, review, and provide comments on internal and external plans/studies; participate in efforts like: STARS and Project Pipeline studies, SMART Scale process.
Multimodal planning coordination: represent VDOT at regional planning committees, work with localities/regional entities to accomplish projects and goals, work with various VDOT divisions in Central Office on state policies/plans.
Research and communications, presentations: provide thoroughly researched responses on a variety of requests; create and deliver polished presentations or talking points; provide promotion and education on VDOT multimodal efforts internally/externally.
Design/construction project participation: serve as a bicycle/pedestrian/multimodal point of contact on projects; provide inputs to planning and scoping phase, review/comment on engineering design plans, and coordinate on construction/maintenance/operations as needed.
Organizational tasks: track projects and work tasks, maintain organized records/notes.

Minimum Qualifications
- Experience reflecting knowledge of project, program management principles and methods.
- Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
- Experience using transportation planning tools
- Experience in transportation planning, urban planning, traffic engineering or civil engineering.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with diverse audiences to include government officials.
- Experience applying thorough knowledge of federal, state, regional, local transportation planning regulations, policies and requirements.
Additional Considerations
- Progressively responsible experience in transportation planning program and project management.
- Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams and other transportation planning professionals on a wide range of transportation-related issues.
- Certified Planner with American Institute of Certified Planners desired.
- Experience with GIS and other software or modeling tools
- Experience with project management and funding or budgets.
