The Town of Carrboro, NC (pop. 21,230) is seeking a strong, positive, and energetic leader to be its next Fire Chief. The Carrboro Fire-Rescue Department is an ISO Class 2 department consisting of 37 firefighters dedicated to protecting the lives and property of Carrboro and Orange County residents, and provides fire suppression, emergency medical services, and light technical rescue services. The Department also has a comprehensive Community Risk Reduction program which includes outreach and public education initiatives.


The Fire Chief is responsible for the planning, directing, and supervising of the overall operations of the Fire-Rescue Department, to include handling personnel and public information matters, coordinating work with the Town Manager and department directors, ensuring that all laws, regulations, and procedures are followed, and maintaining appropriate records and files. Carrboro’s Fire Chief is a working chief who will respond to and participate in life and structure-saving activity when needed. LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The Fire Chief will use the Department’s organizational values of integrity, excellence, and dedication to guide decision making and lead the Department. Below is a list of opportunities in which the next Fire Chief will be focused but is not considered all-inclusive:


Recruitment and retention: The Fire-Rescue Department is facing the challenge of a significant number of employees becoming eligible for retirement within the next five to ten years. As a result, the Fire Chief will have a crucial role in identifying and implementing strategies to attract and retain employees who have the potential to move into leadership positions within the department over time. Ensuring that the diversity of the Department reflects that of the community will be a top priority.


Optimizing operations: The Fire Chief will work closely with Town and Department stakeholders and make recommendations, propose strategies, and develop implementation plans aimed at continuous improvement in service delivery.


Equipment and facility analysis: The next Fire Chief will evaluate the equipment requirements and upgrades needed for the Fire-Rescue Department. This will involve conducting thorough assessments of the Department's current equipment, identifying areas for improvement, and developing a comprehensive plan for acquiring and implementing necessary upgrades. The Fire Chief will work closely with the Town Manager and other stakeholders to ensure the Department is equipped with the facilities, tools, and resources necessary to provide high-quality service to the community.


Compensation and Benefits

The starting salary range for this position is $96,929 - $118,254 depending upon qualifications and experience. The Town also provides a generous benefits program including health insurance, annual, sick, holiday, personal and paid parental leave and includes a 3% contribution to a 401(k) and participation in the North Carolina Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System. Relocation is negotiable.


Desired Qualifications

The position requires a minimum of ten years progressive fire safety experience, to include five years of cross-functional and progressively responsible experience including fire suppression, prevention, EMS, and administrative work. A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent years of experience, is required. A Master’s degree and/or NFA certification is preferred. Graduation from the Executive Fire Officer Program is preferred, as well as designation of Chief Fire Officer through the Center for Public Safety.
