Job Description

The Zoning Administrator performs difficult professional and complex technical work administering and enforcing the County’s Zoning Ordinance as required by the Virginia State Code. Does related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Community Development.


Job Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for the administration, interpretation, enforcement and compliance of the King George County Zoning and Subdivision Ordinance;
  2. Oversees the review and inspection of applicable development plan and permit applications for Ordinance compliance and takes appropriate action to correct noncompliance;
  3. Coordinates staff planning projects and studies; develops and recommends policies and procedures;
  4. Manages inquiries, investigations and inspections of zoning cases to ensure compliance with pertinent laws, ordinances and regulations;
  5. Maintains the Conditional Zoning Index as required by State Code;
  6. Ensures compliance with proffers and Special Exception permits (SE), special exceptions and variances and takes appropriate action to correct noncompliance prior to issuance of the certificate of occupancy;
  7. Researches, prepares, and issues official interpretations of proffers, determinations and vesting decisions;
  8. Administers the County’s proffer compliance program, including public education and enforcement;
  9. Provides staff support to the Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA);
  10. Prepares presentation materials and makes presentations to the BZA, Planning Commission, and Board of Supervisors;
  11. Consults with County Administration and the County Attorney’s Office for zoning and vesting determinations and proffer interpretations, etc.;
  12. Oversees the management of records and inspection reports;
  13. Coordinates with Federal, State, and local agencies, and other internal and external customers on matters relating to zoning compliance;
  14. Assists with developing the Department budget and the capital improvements program;
  15. Attendance may be required at the Monthly Board Meetings;
  16. Some weekend work may be required;
  17. Performs related tasks as required.
